Blue Jays Extended Spring Training Report

Dustin McGowan begins long journey back to the show.

If Dustin McGowan ever pitches for the Blue Jays again it will be in relief, according to Toronto Blue Jay manager John Ferrell.

And that is what the 29-year-old did Saturday (May 14) pitching at the Phillies complex in his first game since July 8, 2008. In one inning, he had 14 pitches, two strikeouts with a fastball clocked at 93 miles per hour and a wicked curve as his strikeout pitch.

Dustin McGowan had a four-year career as a Toronto Blue Jay. He achieved a 20-22 overall record with an 4.75 ERA in 75 games. His best year was in 2007 when he went 12-10. Since July 2008, he underwent two surgeries. The first repaired a torn shoulder, the second fixed a torn rotator cuff.

McGowan's career is somewhat unique in that he pitched for the Dunedin Jays (A), New Hampshire Fishercats (AA) and Toronto Blue Jays all in the same year (2005). We will continue to document his progress.

Josh Roenicke, who pitched in 16 games for the Toronto Blue Jays last year, also saw action Saturday (May 14). He has been pitching at the AAA level this year in Las Vegas, and was recently placed on the seven-day disabled list.
