Dustin McGowan Doesn't Survive The First

The Daytona Cubs jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never looked back.

The Daytona Cubs ruined the long-awaited return of Dustin McGowan in their 7-3 defeat over the D-Jays on Saturday (July 2).

McGowan last pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays in July 2008. Two surgeries and plenty of will power later, McGowan is trying to make a return.

The 28-year-old struggled with his control, throwing 33 pitches to just six batters. He gave up three runs on three hits in just 2/3 of an inning.

Four Cubs pitchers quieted the Blue Jays bats, allowing just three runs on six hits and striking out nine.

The D-Jays (5-5) and Cubs (6-4) will complete their mini two-game series today (July 3), first pitch is at 4 p.m. The Jays will send Ryan Tepera to the mound. Tepera just completed the month of June where he had three seven-inning shutouts.

Notes: The Gulf Coast Blue Jays lost both ends of a doubleheader to the Gulf Coast Pirates on Saturday (1-0 and 3-2). Two young Blue Jays prospects Adonys Cardona and Deivy Estrada were the starters. Cardona is a 17-year-old righthander with a 95-mph fastball and an excellent change-up. Estrada is a crafty 18-year-old lefty. The Pirates countered with their 16-year-old future prospect Luis Heredia. The 6-foot-6-inch right-hander went three scoreless innings, striking out three Jays.
