Etheridge Sets Franchise Record 32 Saves

McGuire throws six shutout innings to beat Stone Crabs 3-2.

Wes Etheridge got his name in the record book with his 32nd save of the season on Friday.

What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is that he has not had a blown save in all 32 attempts. The 26-year-old, who was originally in the Milwaukee Brewers' organization, has had an unusual journey up to this point in his professional baseball career. He most recently pitched in Hawaii after an 18-month retirement.

Deck McGuire put together another strong performance. The 22-year-old did not give up a hit to the Charlotte Stone Crabs' (Tampa Rays) top of the order. The Charlotte lineup features good prospects Hak-Ju Lee (.329), Brett Nommensen (.286), Tyler Bortnick (.296) and Michael Sheridan (.265).

The Georgia Tech alum would yield only two hits while striking out eight and giving up one walk in 81 pitches.

Sean Ochinko led off the sixth with his 12th homer of the year. Later in the sixth, Kevin Nolan's double would send Brian Van Kirk to third and he would score the eventual winning run on a wild pitch.

The D-Jays, who trail the Tampa Yankees by three games in the second half of the Florida State League season, return to Charlotte for game No. 3 of their four-game series today (July 23).

Lakeland native Drew Hutchison, 20, will make his sixth appearance as a Dunedin Blue Jay. Hutchison was recently placed at No. 48 on ESPN insider Keith Law's Minor League prospect list.
