Palm Harbor Youth Triathlon and Benefit

This race -- part of the Youth Triathlon Series -- consists of a 25-yard swim, a 1-mile bike ride, and a quarter-mile run.

Although geared toward youth, organizers have joined forces with the Dunedin-based nonprofit "Backpack Lady Project" to open the event to athletes over 16 who want to race or train.

Any athlete over 16 can race without a registration fee if he or she brings a new backpack to registration to be donated to a Pinellas County youngster for the upcoming school year. Organizers only ask that they pay a $10 one-day insurance fee.

The Backpack Lady Project was organized by Phyllis Ditro, mother of Rob Ditro of the Youth Triathlon Series.

Any racers 16 and younger must pay the standard YTS $45 fee for the race unless you have paid for the season.
