Falcons Claim Third Place Trophy at Dunedin Spring Classic

The DHS Falcons blew through River Ridge and Saint Petersburg in five innings.

The Dunedin High School Falcons made up for a tough by blowing past River Ridge and St. Petersburg high schools for third place at the Dunedin Spring Classic on Saturday, April 2.

Falcons vs. Knights

The Falcons pounded River Ridge Knights 17-1, beginning in the second inning. Dunedin senior outfielder Alex Libby and sophomore infielder Kellen Brown rallied bats early in the game, and then, senior outfielder , who was due for a hit after going 0-3 the previous day, smashed a three-run homer that broke the game wide open.

From that point on, River Ridge was merely batting practice for the Falcons, knocking in nine runs during the second inning alone.

Senior added a two-run homerun to his stats, and Libby another RBI. Dunedin's starting pitcher junior Colyn O’Connel struck out six batters in five innings and only gave up a lone run in the fourth. The Falcons put the Knights out of their misery in five innings.

The Falcons' then advanced to the third place tournament game against the St. Pete High Green Devils.

The Falcons defeated St. Pete High 12-2 in similar fashion.

Among the Falcons' highlights:

  • Senior catcher Jordan Savinon scored two out of three first-inning runs.
  • Seniors Andrew Brodbeck, infielder, and both had two-run doubles.
  • Senior Alex Libby smacked a two-run triple.

The Green Devils put up two runs in the second inning, but Dunedin's starting sophomore pitcher Aaron Chesson, whose primary position is catcher, shut the team out the rest of the five-inning game.

“It good to get back on track, we’re looking forward to next week,” Dunedin head coach Tom Hilbert said.

The Falcons begin district competition in two weeks.

The annual Dunedin Spring Classic tournament, was scheduled over five days at the Englebert Complex in Dunedin, but weather postponements caused nearly all tournament play to be crammed into two and a half days at several different venues.
