Falcons Digest: Track Athletes Place Well at Championships, Baseball Readies for Big Weekend

A weekly wrap-up of Dunedin High School athletics.

Varsity Track and Field

The track and field team performed well at the Pinellas County Athletic Conference championships. Here's how the Falcons placed:

  • Field Events: Junior Jennifer Ryder placed fourth in girls disc and junior got third in disc. Ron Hunter placed third in boys shot. Senior took first in the high jump.
  • Track Events: Senior Trevante Anderson placed seventh in the boys 200-meter. got second in girls 800-meter. Freshman Ahmad Middleton finished seventh in boys 300-meter hurdles, while Cameron Oxiner got fifth and second in the 100-meter hurdles. Junior Alex Koehl placed fourth in the boys 400-meter, junior Zach Maciolek ended up fifth in the 1600-meter (mile).

All of these athletes including the girls 4- by 400-meter and 4- by 800-meter relays have a good shot at getting through to regionals.

The Falcons await their district meet at Osceola on Wednesday, April 20.

Varsity Baseball

Last game: The Falcons were down by six runs in the game last Saturday versus Jesuit. The pushed six runs across by the sixth inning and were down by just a single run with one out in the top of the seventh, when Andrew Brodbeck smashed a two-run homer that snatched the lead away for good.

On deck: The Falcons travel to Palm Harbor University High School tonight and then take on Clearwater High School on Saturday night for their final district game of the regular season.

Playoff analysis: The boys are in an interesting position going into their last three games. If they beat the Clearwater Tornadoes on Saturday, they will force a tie-break scenario with Seminole, with whom they split the regular season series. If they drop that game to the Tornadoes, they will fall into the second district seed, in which they'd likely face the Tarpon Springs Spongers in the quarterfinals of the district playoffs. The Falcons have owned the Spongers this year, sweeping the two-game series with a combined score of 18-0.

If they end up with the No. 1 district seed, they will sit out the first round and await the highest seed that gets through to the semis.

Dunedin Patch will have coverage of The Falcons’ last district game against Clearwater.

Varsity Softball

The Lady Falcons are finished with regular-season play. They finished their Pinellas County Atheletic Conference game Thursday night and will head into the district playoffs on Monday.

Playoff analysis: They will likely finish with the fourth seed and have to get past the Tarpon Springs Lady Spongers to advance to district semis or possibly against a very tough Seminole team.
