Falcons Record-Holder Faces Big Decision

Go pro or to go to college?

Recent New York Mets draft pick Casey Turgeon graduated as one of the best baseball players in history.

The 18-year-old shortstop has a scholarship to play as a Gator at the University of Florida next season, and with his recent selection in the MLB draft, he faces a decision every high school baseball player wishes they had — go pro or go to college?

“He is the greatest player that I’ve ever coached," said Head Coach Tom Hilbert. "He leaves DHS with five school records and a state championship ring.”

Turgeon is the Falcons career leader in hits (132), runs (157), walks (133), times on base (293) and innings played (745). He was a part of the 2008 5A State Championship team and helped the team maintain its status as a powerhouse with 100 wins, 31 losses and one tie during his career.

On Tuesday, he became the 672nd pick in the 22nd round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.

The the New York Mets drafted his older brother Erik Turgeon, 24, in the 25th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft out of the University of Connecticut, according to his Minor League Baseball profile. He pitches for the Double-A Binghamton Mets and has a .500 ERA. The elder Turgeon at one time also helped out as an assistant coach for his high school alma mater.

Several attempts were made to reach Casey Turgeon for comment. He could not be reached.

“Whatever he decides to do he will be a success,” Hilbert said.
