The high school football season starts in earnest Aug. 30 when the Dunedin High Falcons face the Dixie Hollins Rebels.

The two teams meet for their first match-up against each other this season 7:30 p.m. at Dixie Hollins High School, 4940 62nd Street N, St. Petersburg.

Dunedin is expected to fare well this year under new Head Coach Denis Gillen, but will still be challenged against 5A district 8 rivals Tarpon Springs (1-0), Lakewood (0-0) and Gibbs (0-0).

Last week, although the game was called for lightening in the third quarter, Dunedin lost a brutal exhibition game against Largo High 46-6, in which one Largo player left with a shoulder injury.

It’s early in the season, and the Tampa Bay Times recalls past Dunedin state championship losses and ponders if any Bay area teams can win a state championship.
