McGowan and Tepera Harpoon Hammerheads

D-Jays score seven in the seventh to defeat Jupiter 9-1.

The D-Jays won 9-1 and snapped Jupiter's seven-game winning streak on Monday. The win comes as the team's second in a row.

Dustin McGowan made his sixth rehab start and pitched two scoreless 1-2-3 innings. He did, however, give up three consecutive singles in the second, which produced the only Hammerhead run of the night.

As he's done in two previous games, Ryan Tepera took over for McGowan. Usually a starter, the right-hander had given up 11 runs in 10.2 innings as McGowan's tandem pitcher. The third time seemed to be the charm as Tepera retired the first nine batters he faced, holding Jupiter to just three hits over the game's final six innings.

The D-Jays blew their tight game wide open with seven runs in the seventh — thanks to five walks issued by three Hammerhead pitchers.

Kevin Ahrens opened the scoring for the Jays with his 10th homer of the season.

On Deck: The D-Jays (15-16) and Hammerheads (12-18) resume their four-game series in Jupiter today (July 26) with a very attractive pitching match-up between the D-Jays Nestor Molina and the Hammerheads ace Chad James

Notes:

  • As expected Deck McGuire received word on Sunday evening that he was called up to New Hampshire Fisher Cats Double-A.  McGuire was having an excellent year for the D-Jays, with an ERA of 2.75 and 102 strikeouts in 104 innings against just 38 walks.
  • The Gulf Coast Blue Jays were whipped by the Gulf Coast Pirates 12-4. Outfielder Nico Taylor, 21, had two hits including a double and an RBI.
