McGuire Breezes To Fifth Victory

Kevin Nolan continues his hot bat, leading Jays to a 2-1 win.

The Dunedin Blue Jays cooled off the red hot Yankees, defeating the baby pinstripes 2-1 Monday.

As predicted earlier, this had the potential of a pitchers duel. Deck McGuire of the Jays and Josh Romanski of the Yankees did not let the fans down.

McGuire, the Toronto Blue Jays first pick in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, shut the Yankees out after giving up a first inning run.

Romanski held the D-Jays scoreless until the sixth when they put three hits together along with a Yankee error to score two runs.

Romanski's arrival in pinstripes is an interesting one. He first was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2005 but chose to go to the University of San Diego. After three successful seasons playing for the Toreros, he was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers. Before the California native threw a pitch for the Brewers, he had Tommy John surgery. The Brewers surprisingly released him soon after the surgery and the Yankees wasted no time in signing him to a Minor League contract. Romanski could be an unexpected gift for the Yankees.

The Jays' Kevin Nolan's incredible streak at the plate continued on Monday. After striking out and flying out in his first two times at bat, he double and singled in the next two.

Since being recalled from Lansing, Nolan has 14 hits in 28 at bats.

The Clearwater Threshers visit Tuesday (June 14), to begin a three-game series. This will be the final series before the All-Star break.

The Threshers have had the Jays' number this year, winning eight of 10, however they are coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Daytona Cubs

Even though both teams have been eliminated from the first half of the Florida State League season, these games still have a great deal of importance.

If the Daytona Cubs were to win the second half as well, the team with the second best overall record in the division would be the fourth team in the playoffs. The Jays trail the Threshers by three games.

Side note: Brock Kjeldgaard, the Brevard County Manatees slugger was selected Florida State League player of the week for third straight week. The London, Ontario native has yet to be invited to this weeks All-Star game.
