Summer Camps Abound for Kids and Teens

The kids are on summer break, but you're not. Here is a collection of some fun summer camps for children and teens of all ages.

The kids are on summer break, but you’re not. Here is a compilation of Dunedin's most fun summer camps to keep your kids' minds stimulated and yours sane.

Archaeology Camp (ages 9 to 12).

  • Description: Learn about artifacts and how they become a part of a museum collection, and decorate a clay pot, dig it up in a mock archaeological site and reconstruct it. Includes a field trip to a real archaeological dig at Weedon Island in St. Petersburg.
  • When: July 31 to Aug. 3; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Space Camp (ages 9 to 12)

  • Description: Features rocket-building, flight simulations, space gear, and a visit from a NASA astronaut Nicole Stott.
  • When: July 11 to 14; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Cooking Camp (ages 8 to 15)

  • Description: Local Chef John Lewis and Debbie McGiffin teach cutlery skills, ingredient prep and other kitchen tips while preparing a variety of dishes, with the final day culminating with a meal for parents. Various menu items include: Lobster bisque, crab Rangoon, sesame chicken with brown rice pilaf, chicken rollatini with basil cream sauce, and crème brulee, just to name a few.
  • When: Chose from five weeks: June 18 to 22/ June 25 to 29/ July 9 to 13/ July 23 to 27/ Aug. 6 to 10; 9 a.m. to noon

Art Camps (ages 4 and a half to 14)

Bagpipe Camp (ages 11 to 17)

  • Description: Music theory, instrument maintenance. Interest is the only requirement. Taught by Piping director Iain Donaldson.
  • When: Four-day camp sessions. Chose from three weeks: July 9 to 12/ July 16 to 19/ July 23 to 26; 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Where:
  • Price: $200 for all three weeks, $140 for two weeks, $80 for one week with Dunedin ID

Teen Camp (ages 11 to 14)

  • Description: Each week during the summer, teens get to do fun activities and field trips according to a set theme. Some activities include laser tag, Dunedin Blue Jays games, swimming, bowling, rock climbing, archery, canoeing and mini golf.
  • When: Chose from 10 possible weeks between June 11 to Aug. 17; 9 to 5 p.m.

Hammock Day Camp (ages 7 to 13)

  • Description: Nature, environmental, Native American and nature-centered crafts, canoeing, archery, swim lessons, family night.
  • When: Chose from three, two-week sessions: June 18 to 29/ July 2 to 13/ July 16 to 27; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where:
  • Price: $240 with Dunedin ID card.

Nature Camp (ages 5 to 11)

  • Description: Each week has different themed activities, including space, fish, reptiles, animals, birds, aerodynamics, weather, spiders and marine life. Includes swimming at Highlander Pool.
  • When: Chose from nine, one-week sessions starting June 11 and ending Aug. 10; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
