Charity Collects Christmas Gifts for Haiti's Children

Dunedin residents may help bring holiday happiness to Haitian children at Christmas in August event Monday.

Eva DeHart hopes Dunedin can help her brighten the holidays for children in Haiti.

Her 24-year charity For Haiti With Love, a food program that provides nutritionally balanced meals to the hungry, formula to abandoned babies and 24-hour emergency medical care, holds a dinner fundraiser at , 421 Main St, on Aug. 8. The annual Christmas in August fundraiser includes dinner, door prizes and a live auction of authentic Haitian crafts, artists, woodcarvings and art.

A simple mission trip to Haiti in 1968 sparked her and her late husband Don’s lifelong passion for Haiti’s people. She has since launched her charity (1982), which has built more than 50 homes for the homeless, churches, schools and marketplaces in six villages. The organization also sends donations and medical supplies monthly at an $8,000 to $10,000 shipping cost.
