Isaac May Bring Heavy Rain, Tornadoes to Tampa Bay

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for most of the Tampa Bay area as Isaac begins moving through the Gulf of Mexico.

The Tampa Bay area won’t likely see a direct hit from Tropical Storm Isaac, but that doesn’t mean the storm won’t wreak havoc on the region’s weather. “(We’re) expecting Isaac to stay well out to the west,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Roger Gass. However, “rain bands will continue to move across the area.” There’s also a threat for isolated tornadoes today and a possible storm surge of 1 to 3 feet above normal in the coastal areas at high tide, Gass added. Strong wind gusts are also possible. Isaac was located about 180 miles southwest of Ft. Myers at 5 a.m. today, Aug. 27, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is heading west northwest at 14 mph and has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph. It is anticipated …

Most Tampa Area Warnings Remain as Isaac Moves Near Keys

The tropical storm continues to shift westward, but forecasters aren't giving an all-clear in the Tampa Bay area just yet.

Many Tampa Bay area counties remain under a tropical storm warning despite a further shift to the west in Tropical Storm Isaac’s track. “Even though it does look like conditions are going to be improving, we still want people to be on the lookout,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Jessica Talley. The tropical storm warnings remain in effect for Sarasota, Manatee, Pinellas and Hillsborough counties. Only the coastal area of Pasco County is still under a tropical storm warning. The National Hurricane Center put Isaac just south of Key West as of its 5 p.m. advisory. The storm is moving west northwest at 16 mph and has maximum sustained winds of 60 mph. Isaac is still expected to reach hurricane strength as it makes its way through…

Tropical Storm Warnings Remain Despite Isaac’s Western Shift

The storm’s size makes it a continued concern for the Tampa Bay area, forecasters say.

The latest projections call for Tropical Storm Isaac to move even further to the west of the Tampa Bay area, but forecasters at the National Weather Service are saying it’s still too early for the region to breathe a sigh of relief. “It’s a pretty big storm,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Ernie Jillson. “Tropical storm force winds are extending 180 miles to the northeast of the center.” With this in mind, Jillson said tropical storm warnings remain in effect for the entire Bay area, including Pasco, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota and Pinellas counties. A warning means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the next 36 hours. Isaac was 80 miles southeast of Key West when the National Hurricane Center released its …

Update: Tampa Bay Still in Isaac’s Path

The storm’s projected track has changed little throughout the day.

Update 2:24 a.m. Aug. 23: The 2 a.m. advisory from the National Weather Service still has Tampa Bay within the five-day cone of uncertainty for Tropical Storm Isaac. The latest forecast map shows the storm, projected to be a hurricane, southwest of Tampa Bay by 8 p.m. Monday. Earlier: While it’s still too early to tell for sure where Tropical Storm Isaac will eventually strike, the entire Tampa Bay area remains in the five-day cone of uncertainty. According to the National Hurricane Center’s 11 p.m. Aug. 22 advisory, Isaac remains southeast of Puerto Rico right now. It has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph at the moment. The storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane sometime between Thursday and Friday. A brush with the Dominican …

So many people think that it can't happen here because (1) we've been spared in the near past, (2) our geography prevents it, (3) and the latest one I've heard is that Indians are ptotecting us. Come on, people! We live on the coast of Florida. Face reality.   more ›

Hurricane Season Predictions Often Misleading, Officials Say

Emergency management officials say the time to get ready is now — it only takes one storm to make it a bad season.

Just because the 2012 hurricane season is predicted to have relatively few storms doesn’t mean that residents should ignore the potential for danger. “It doesn’t matter how many storms you get,” said Thomas Iovino, spokesman for Pinellas County Communications. “If a storm goes over your area, it’s a bad season.” Iovino pointed to the 1992 hurricane season to serve as a reminder. “Andrew was a light season storm,” he said. “Andrew was the first hurricane (of that season). It doesn’t matter how many storms are forecast. Every year, you have to treat it like this is the year we’re going to get one.” With that in mind, Iovino and officials from other Tampa Bay area counties are asking residents to get ready earlier rather than later. For tips…
