My Independence Day: Freedom From Over-Parenting

Making it a priority to teach these kids to do something on their own.

As usual, I was patting myself on the back about how much better of a parent I was than my friend who wouldn’t let her 1½-year-old jump off a tiny wall that my children had safely hurtled since they first began walking. My face broke into a smile as I mused on how I've found the perfect balance between safety and over-protection. I let my children explore, at their own pace, dangerous situations (walls, stairs, grenades) until they become experts. Just as the width of my prideful smile peaked in the center of my cheeks, the 1-year-old sat down and started teaching my 3-year-old how to put on his shoes. My mouth deflated like an untied balloon, landing into a slack-lipped pout. Should my kid be able to put his shoes on already? This …

July Fourth Celebrations in Pinellas County

Here are some great events that are happening this 4th of July in Pinellas County.

1. Dunedin's Hometown USA: The City of Dunedin Parks & Recreation Department and the Dunedin Blue Jays will host the annual Dunedin Hometown USA event in partnership with Budweiser, featuring a game against the Daytona Cubs and a concert with fireworks. 2. Kiwanis Midnight Run: Get active this Indepedence Day. The previous 32 midnight runs have raised more than $595,000 for the Kiwanis clubs of Dunedin and Top of the Bay community service activities. Between 2,200 and 2,800 runners are expected at this event.  3. Safety Harbor 4th of July Parade: Make sure you wear your red, white and blue for the American Legion Auxilliary Main Street Parade. Following the parade, there will be a patriotic ceremony and live music at the gazebo at John …

Things to Know for the Hometown USA 4th of July

The Dunedin Blue Jays will host the annual Hometown USA event this year in partnership with Budweiser.

The City of Dunedin Parks & Recreation Department and the Dunedin Blue Jays will host the annual Dunedin Hometown USA event this Indepedence Day in partnership with Budweiser, featuring a game against the Daytona Cubs and a concert with fireworks. Come out for what is sure to be a day of fun in the sun. 1) Cost: Free to attend 2) Time & Date: Gates open at 3:15 p.m., game begins at 4:15 p.m. on the 4th of July 2012 3) Where: Florida Auto Exchange Stadium, 373 Douglas Ave. The Jolley Trolley will offer free rides on the 4th of July. 4) Happening at the game: Bounce houses, face painters, and more to entertain the entire family.
