Returning Soldier Surprises Daughter at Rays Game

When a Dunedin girl was invited to throw out the first pitch at Thursday's Rays game, she received a very special surprise.

Sports fans witnessed a very special homecoming Thursday, when 9-year-old Alayna Adams of Dunedin was invited to throw the ceremonial pitch at a Tampa Bay Rays home game. She did not realize that the player behind the catcher's mask was her dad, Lt. Col. William Adams, just home from a year-long tour of duty in Afghanistan. Standing next to her mom, Dana Adams, Alayna tossed the ball. It wasn't much of a pitch, falling way short of the catcher. But the moment of surprise was a home run, with bases loaded, for fans – and Alayna, who rushed to her Dad. Alayna is a third-grader at Westlake Christian School, according to the Tampa Bay Times. A pair of white Clydesdales carried Army Spc. Zachary Lee Shannon's American flag-draped casket to his eternal resting place. The equestrian-led procession walked his remains slowly beneath an archway of Spanish moss-covered live oaks. Gruff-looking, the Patriot Guard Riders, a motorcycle group clad in black leather jackets, stood at attention clutching American flags and saluting as the procession clopped by. Shannon, 21, a U.S. soldier who died March 11 when his helicopter went down in Afghanistan was laid to rest with full military honors Wednesday, March 27, during a solemn, private ceremony inside Dunedin Cemetery. Doves were released during a service at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens, then close friends and family rode in a 3.5-mile …
