The exhibit, at the Mahaffey Theater, marks the 100-year anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.
A century ago, the magnificent Titanic ship sunk after colliding with an iceberg in the Atlantic. More than 1,500 lives were lost, as well as countless artifacts. Now you can see the treasures recovered at the Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. The exhibit runs through March 3, 2013, at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. Inside the exhibit you'll see artifacts that have not been displayed previously in Tampa Bay, including plates, coal, clothing and much more. According to the Mahaffey, the galleries focus on the legendary Titanic’s compelling human stories as best told through authentic artifacts recovered from the ocean floor. There also are extensive room re-creations. “This is a rare opportunity to view these historic pieces,” …

Multiple designers put their creativity to the test at the Wearable Art 8 Fashion Show in Dunedin.
Dunedin Fine Art Center's eighth annual Wearable Art Fashion Show was a monumental affair on Aug. 11. Several designers put their creativity to the test, and created outfits that wowed almost 1,000 attendees. Here is some information on the designers who participated and their lines. Rocky and Kathleen Bridges made a trashy chic appearance out a combination of fabric and found metal in a display called From Rags to Bitches. Michael Della Penna, a world champion in Moscow, made an Aluminum Fashion Experiment show with his models. Mark Byrne with Funny Money Productions used ordinary balloons and turned them into creative headware and full length couture. Byrne has traveled the world and has performed in Shanghai, Brussels, London, Las Vegas…

Owner Ryan Friese wants to provide a showcase for talented local artists and become a big part of the downtown art district.
Dunedin is well known for many things, including scenic views, trendy shops, bountiful beer houses and an eclectic arts scene. It was the arts scene that attracted Ryan Friese, the owner of Waterfront Gallery at 715 Broadway. He moved his shop from Tarpon Springs to be a part of what he believes is a special community that appreciates art. "When I was scouting potential locations, I considered places like St. Augustine, Sarasota and South Florida," Friese says. "I wanted to come to an area that would fully support an art gallery, and I knew Dunedin was one of those communities." Friese developed a keen appreciation for the beauty of original works, having grown up around artists in a Colorado gallery. But his lack of artistic talent …

Schlegel and his band Shoeless Soul will be at Pioneer Park for inaugural festival.
Name: Rene Schlegel Band: Shoeless Soul Since: 2010 Keys to Awesomeness: Schlegel and his band Shoeless Soul play the Life & Light Lantern Parade and Festival Sunday afternoon. He also hosts the open mic night at the Dunedin Smokehouse, and occasionally fills in for Ben Plott at the Dunedin Brewery. Schlegel formerly played in the popular Florida touring band Boon. How did you get started? "When I was a teen, my friend had a couple of guitars and we started jamming out. I was hooked immediately, but it wasn't until my late 20s that I began to write songs. My musical journey became more serious after forming the band Boon which played the Tampa Bay scene for six years. After the band broke up, I started writing a bunch of songs, and …

The Children's Museum will offer an even wider variety of services for young artists.
The Dunedin Fine Art Center began a $2 million expansion and renovation project four months ago, which will add roughly 3,000 square feet to the David L. Mason Children's Art Museum. Todd Still, the museum's director of youth education, said that construction has complicated the logistics of holding classes at the center, which is closed through June, but that the faculty and staff have kept it running smoothly. "Surgically removing 3,000 square feet of an existing structure and reconfiguring what will become 6,000 square feet of new space is tricky business," said Still. Classes normally held at the building are still being offered, but at different locations. Jennifer Lederhouse, a staff member who handles class registrations, said that …
