Two downtown businesses brought the fountain in to help the city make the area a pedestrian-friendly attraction.
Mike Rey, owner of Paris Hair Design, has worked to make the intersection outside of his shop more pedestrian friendly for the past year and a half. Last Wednesday, the fruits of his labor became a reality when a fountain, the centerpiece of a revitalization project at the corner of Main Street and Highland Avenue, was installed outside of The Living Room Restaurant & Lounge. “I wanted to open the area up, make it so you could see the businesses easier and make the whole corner more pedestrian friendly,” Rey said. “The fountain is the focal point, and it blends in beautifully. Rey and René Johnson, the owner of The Living Room, paid for the fountain jointly. Johnson is assuming legal liability for the public property she is using to add…

The Living Room on Main is likely to get right-of-way for more dining and an outdoor fountain.
City officials are paving the way for a popular Main Street restaurant to gain outdoor dining space. Officials plan to discuss a possible legal agreement with the Living Room on Main owners at tonight's city commission meeting (6:30 p.m., City Hall). The agreement would allow for 20 outdoor seats for dining (with alcohol) and the installation of a fountain. It outlines that the restaurant would maintain liability for the dining area and also the upkeep of the fountain. "The provision of outdoor, café-style dining has been viewed as important ingredient to the ambiance of downtown,” Rob DiSpirito, city manager, wrote in a memo supporting the agreement to commissioners. Officials believe it will help attract visitors to the east side of the …

Dunedin officials stuck on balancing parking and green space in the peninsula area.
Officials are hungup on how parking fits into downtown's marina waterfront future. Overall, the plan is meant to make the Dunedin's marina waterfront appear more “connected” to the downtown business area. “If you look down there now, there’s nothing really that attracts you to that waterfront. … It kinda comes across as a dead zone,” Dave Gildersleeve, civil engineering consultant from Wade Trim, said during a presentation to city commissioners on Sept 15. Gildersleeve presented commissioners with 18 recommendations based on studies and surveys with community members. The city hired Wade Trim last year to help develop the plan. The most important of the proposed $1.8 million (estimated) changes, Gildersleeve said, is constructing a Main …

City officials are going over plans for unifying the Dunedin Marina with pedestrian-friendly downtown.
The future of Dunedin’s downtown waterfront is up for review Thursday. Community Redevelopment Agency officials are going over an estimated $1.8 million plan to revamp the downtown marina and waterfront area. Officials are discussing 18 proposed enhancements in their 2025 Illustrative Corridor Plan. And, based on commissioner feedback during a workshop Thursday, they may be incorporated into the overall strategy to help downtown become more functional and cohesive (2033 Community Redevelopment Agency Master Plan). Some marina improvements include the addition of a parking garage, an interactive fountain at Edgewater Park and a promenade that connects the marina visually to downtown shops. Community Redevelopment paired with Detroit-based …

The City Commission will hear public input on an extension of redevelopment plans.
The City Commission meets tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the City Hall Chambers. The Commission will hear public input on the Community Redevelopment Agency’s Master Plan amendment and an ordinance to allow dogs in outdoor areas of restaurants and bars. The Redevelopment Agency’s master plan, enacted in 1988, is the city’s map for revitalizing and beautifying a focused district (encompassing 217 acres) in the downtown area but only until 2018. “[It] keeps the downtown strong and creates opportunities,” said Community Redevelopment Agency Director Bob Ironsmith. “When someone thinks of Dunedin, they think of downtown … Having a strong downtown is key for the soul of Dunedin.” “The first plan,” said Ironsmith, “accomplished 90 percent of what’s in …
