Coming Soon: Dollar General on Belcher Road

Construction of discount retail chain Dollar General's new location in Dunedin is nearly complete.

The latest discount retail chain store to join the Dunedin landscape is nearly complete. The up-and-coming Dollar General at 1260 Belcher Rd., near the corner of State Road 580, is constructed with faux windows that give it an upgraded, neighborhood feel when compared to the architecture style of the chain's base model.  Landscaping and road improvements were also made. The 9,100-square-foot store, which the city approved in October, is slated to receive interior work before it opens, possibly within the month.  Dollar General is also building at 1326 San Christopher Dr., where it replaces a boat and RV storage lot. Dunedin has one other Dollar General Store at Causeway Plaza. The stores carry school supplies, beach items, toys, toiletries…

Why would we need another Dollar General??? There is also one on Highland and Sunset Point in Clearwater which is still very close to Dunedin's Southside. So with San Christopher That would make 4 in a few mile radius. We also have Family Dollar Dollar Tree and several other smaller Discount/bargain store in town. Please, no more! I'd rather see the old storage lot, it was less of an eyesore than…   more ›

Concrete Fence, Live Oaks Part of Dollar General Deal

Developers for an incoming discount retail chain store on San Christopher Drive are promising to incorporate landscaping and both concrete and PVC fencing to provide a barrier to residents living nearby.

Live oaks, crape myrtles and concrete and PVC fencing are all part of the plans for an incoming Dollar General on San Christopher Drive. Developers for the discount retail chain promised the buffers for disgruntled neighbors in December, and they delivered at Thursday's city commission meeting. Commissioners approved land use and zoning changes that would discontinue split zoning and allow for Dollar General to build on what some neighbors called an "eyesore" vehicle storage lot at 1326 San Christopher Drive, near the corner of Pinehurst Road. Dollar General's final site plans presented on Feb. 21 incorporated landscaping and fencing changes to accommodate residents who voiced concerns for stormwater flooding, increased traffic and noise …

San Christopher Dollar General Plans Move Along

Dollar General developers updated site plans that replace a privately-owned "eyesore" storage lot. The item is up for discussion at tonight's city commission meeting.

Updated plans for a Dollar General Store to replace an "eyesore" storage lot are expected to get a green light at Thursday's commission meeting. Developers recently changed the plans based on resident concerns for noise, traffic and stormwater flooding in a Dec. 6 public hearing. The latest plans have already received staff approval and await the final OK from city officials at Thursday's second public hearing.  Land use and rezoning changes that allow for an incoming discount retail chain at 1326 San Christopher Drive met resistance in November in December from both residents and a citizen advisory board that focuses on Dunedin development.  Commissioners said they had no legal reason to deny the Dollar General plans. Developers said they…

If the city would like another dollar store maybe they should put it in the downtown Dunedin Main Street area...but that would NEVER happen, as that is the only area that concerns city officials.   more ›

Too Many Discount Stores? Here's What Dunedin's Saying

As Dunedin city leaders weigh in on updated site plans to a Dollar General Store on San Christopher Drive, here's what Dunedin readers have to say.

Since we told you in December about potential land use and zoning changes that would allow for an incoming discount retail chain, Patch readers have had plenty to say on the topic. Our lastest story on the topic, Dollar General One Step Closer to San Christopher, received lots of discussion. Here's what some Dunedin Patch readers had to say: Hannah Andrews: "Good enough. The lot will be functional now." Karen Burton: "Corporate America wins again. Profit is the bottom line and not people. I thought Dunedin was supposed to be "green" as they constantly brag. Goods made in China and other countries under near slave labor conditions are "green"? Our "Delightful Dunedin" is now the new poster child of Wal-Mart and Dollar stores. Thought the …

Do a web search on Dollar General and see the effects that their openings have on surrounding neighborhoods. Also see how they come in NOT selling alcohol and tobacco products and about 6 months after they are open and the (negative) hoop-la about their opening has somewhat subsided; they (Dollar General) apply for and receive licenses to sell those products. It just gets better and better.......   more ›

Dollar General One Step Closer to San Christopher

Dunedin City Commissioners voted unanimously in favor of preliminary land use and zoning changes and site plans for a Dollar General discount retail store that would replace an "eyesore" storage lot on San Christopher Drive on Thursday.

Ron Retterer just wanted to sell the "eyesore" storage lot he's owned for the past 20 to 30 years. "I’m ready to sell this place, I really am," he told Dunedin Commissioners at Thursday night's city meeting.  And despite the fact that a citizen advisory board recommended city leaders deny plans for a Dollar General Store on his lot, commissioners told impassioned Dunedin residents they had no legal reason to do so. "It’s about, 'what does the law say,' " Commissioner Julie Ward Bujalski told residents. "If you say that [the store] is not compatible. It’s got to be something within our code." Residents issued passionate arguments both for and against the discount retail chain planned for 1326 San Christopher Drive, near the Pinehurst Road …

The Retterer's are the current property owners of the San Christopher parcel which was on the table last Thursday night........And yes many of the Dollar General Stores do carry bread and milk and canned goods; and beer and wine as well - the delivery of which will be an added burden to an already congested road system (despite what the City planners say the San Christopher/Pinehurst corridor IS …   more ›

Should Dollar General Replace 'Eyesore' Storage Lot in Dunedin?

The second proposal for a Dollar General Store up for public discussion within the last 75 days — this one at San Christopher Drive and Pinehurst Road — is on the agenda for Thursday's city meeting at City Hall.

Ron Retterer's boat and auto storage lot is a mess of code violations. Open boats and split tires on his property collect rainwater, making it a mosquito breeding ground, and the overgrown ditch in the back, well, that never gets cleaned out, said Greg Rice, Dunedin's director of planning and development. A volunteer advisory board went so far as to call Retterer's storage lot an "eyesore" during a Nov. 14 Local Planning Agency meeting, but snubbed plans for land use and zone changes that would allow a major discount retail store to go in its place. Rice is bringing the snubbed proposal for a Dollar General Store at 1326 San Christopher Dr. to city commissioners for approval Thursday anyway. Discount Retail Store May Help Struggling …

Incoming Dollar General Sparks Talk of New Anti Cookie-Cutter Codes

Dunedin commissioners suggested adding façade design concepts in its architectural guidelines to reduce the cookie-cutter look of incoming businesses Thursday, after reviewing plans for a Dollar General slated for Belcher Road.

Early plans for a Dollar General discount store sparked discussion of whether staff had addressed its cookie-cutter design during Thursday night's City Commission meeting. Commissioners unanimously approved the concept plans for the 9,100-square-foot Dollar General to be constructed at 1260 Belcher Road, at the site of a former Bank of America near State Road 580. Greg Rice, planning and development director, said that while Dollar General's architectural style is not one recommended in the city's architectural guidelines, it is an upgrade from a base prototype model. The architectural guidelines for developers were adopted during an era when the city wanted to address the look of condominium and residential development. The guidelines …
