Thank Cod It's Friday

Fish Friday: Dunedin Golf Club is Fry with Fine Dining Flair

Dunedin Golf Club's Friday night fish fry is on the finer side.

A white table cloth, glass goblets for water and perfect place settings. It's the kind of Friday night you make a reservation for at Dunedin Golf Club.  And that's no joke. Although the public is welcome, it's quite the same as loading up the SUV and heading down to the driving range with some buddies. Calling ahead is the best way to ensure seating at this fish fry with a fine dining flair. But don't let the pretense intimidate you, the restaurant's prices are reasonable ($9.95 for the fish fry special) and since diners are seated in limited intervals, the wait staff does not have to turn tables quickly, meaning you've got time to actually enjoy your meal and chat with your company.  The food comes out in a flash: a big plate of fried …

Swedish Visitor Introduces Snow Golf to Dunedin Club

Per-Olof Kellquist, a retired businessman vacationing from Sweden, explained what it's like to golf in the snow. On Jan. 24, his group got to play in the palm trees at Dunedin Golf Club.

This time of year, golf courses in Sweden are snowed over, explains Per-Olof Kellquist. Kellquist, of Stockholm, helped forge the Swedish aviation industry. His company, Si ATM, produces software for operating systems, training systems and air traffic control simulators used around the world. On Jan. 24, he grabbed a post-game beer at Dunedin Golf Club as part of a 13-day couples golf vacation booked through South Florida Golf Tours.  It was the their first time in Florida. His foursome included his wife, Irene Kellquist, and their longtime friends Lennart Ericson, a bigtime builder for 40 years in Sweden, and Margareta Edholm.  "We normally go abroad to find good weather," Kellquist said. Bullet Causes $3,400 in Damages to City Water Tower

Damage from a bullet hole that struck one of the city's elevated water towers during a Dunedin man's pre-dawn shooting spree in December, not only caused a 550,000-gallon leak, but cost $3,400 in repairs.

A single bullet hole that leaked 550,000 gallons of reclaimed water from a Dunedin reservoir is repaired and back in operation, city officials report. A man, armed against coyotes, went on an allegedly drunken, pre-dawn shooting spree at Dunedin Golf Club striking the 200-foot water tower near Curlew Road on Dec. 11. "Fortunately, the tank was mostly full when the bullet penetrated it," Tom Burke, city engineer, wrote in an email to Dunedin Patch. "The stored water apparently helped to dissipate the bullet’s energy and prevented other damage within the tank." Burke said that after staff learned of the damages, an emergency work order was placed and awarded to Utility Service Co., Inc., the same Perry, GA, company that repainted both of …

You know what....people make mistakes. I personally know him and he is the most kind and thoughtful person I know. He actually saved someone's life on the golf course but no one ever mentioned that did they.   more ›

Deputies: Man in Golf Cart Shoots City Water Tower

A Dunedin man is arrested for going on an early Tuesday shooting spree in his golf cart at Dunedin Golf Club. No one was injured, but one of his rounds caused damage to the city water tower.

An intoxicated Dunedin man who went on an early morning shooting spree at a golf course and caused damage to the city water tower is in custody, authorities report. Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies responded to several calls from residents saying they heard gunfire in the area of Dunedin Golf Club around 3:40 a.m. Tuesday. They began searching for the source of the gunfire when they saw a vehicle coming off a golf cart access road. When they stopped the cart they encountered Mark Fitzgerald, 49, of 2340 Mangrum Drive, displaying signs of impairment. He was armed with a high-powered .308-caliber rifle and a 45-caliber handgun. Fitzgerald had fired rounds earlier while riding in his golf cart on the course, deputies report. Fitzgerald told…

Historic Local Golf Course Set to Celebrate 85th Anniversary

Dunedin Golf Club, a former headquarters of the PGA, is a hidden gem among the myriad area courses.

With so many excellent courses and country clubs to choose from in this area, it’s inevitable that some spots are going to get lost amidst the likes of courses such as Innisbrook, Westchase and TPC of Tampa Bay.  But the residents of Dunedin and its surrounding communities have a classic course that is infinitely playable and rich in history — the Dunedin Golf Club, a former headquarters of the PGA — hiding in plain sight. “What we have here is so incredible,” Jane Baird, president of the club's board of directors, said. “Many of our members have moved to the area just to be close to the course.” Indeed, as its 85th anniversary year began on Jan. 1, the history of the club reads like something out of a Hollywood script. After a visiting …
