The next round of competition is Thursday, May 16.
Students from Dunedin Highland Middle School have advanced to the next round of the Pinellas County Schools' annual Quiz Bowl. The brainy challenge will be held on Thursday, May 16. Imagine "Jeopardy!" without the big-money prizes or national viewing audience. That pretty much sums up the intensity and difficult questions posed to the kids competing in Quiz Bowl. Last Thursday was the preliminary round and featured teams from Azalea, Bay Point Middle, Carwise, Dunedin Highland, Largo, Morgan Fitzgerald, Palm Harbor, Safety Harbor, Sanderlin, Seminole and Thurgood Marshall. The school teams that advanced on to the next round are: Palm Harbor Middle, Safety Harbor Middle, Bay Point Middle, Seminole Middle, Dunedin Highland Middle, and Azalea…

New after-school programs opened Monday in Dunedin and Largo.
New Boys & Girls Club programs opened for the first time Monday afternoon at Rainbow Village in Largo and at Dunedin Highland Middle School. The large-open club room was filled with children working on homework and playing games. Boys & Girls Clubs of the Suncoast took over the youth programming in Dunedin and Largo after the Sheriff's Police Athletic League program moved to its centrally-located Lealman complex. The child-centered Boys & Girls Club program allows the children to have fun and "helps them achieve whatever goal they have whether its personal, academic or athletic. The goal is to encourage their overall development," said Club Director Andrea Nix. The middle school program in Dunedin "is more of a sports club with flag …

Alex Gregory Lynam was once a drum major in the marching band at Dunedin Highland Middle School. That's how his parents Ken and Nancy Lynam remember him: stoic, beaming in his Tartan marching band uniform in front of a "Welcome to Dunedin" sign one sunny day in 1999. "I'm very proud of it, and of the memories of my handsome, talented son," Ken Lynam said in an email the same day the driver in the head-on crash that caused his son's death would face traffic charges in Pinellas County Court. Alex Lynam was heading south driving a 2008 ZLMI Scooter on Bayshore Boulevard late on June 1. Shirley A. Gil was driving north in her 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis. Gil, 73, began to turn left at Baywood Drive North. Lynam crashed head-on into her. The …

The accident happened around 8:40 a.m., which was before school crossing guards begin their shifts, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
A Dunedin student was struck by a SUV as she crossed in front of Palm Harbor Middle School Monday morning. The 13-year-old Dunedin Highland Middle School student was crossing 19th Street North and was walking toward Palm Harbor Middle School, when a 2000 Toyota 4Runner driven by Steven Carl Kozak, 49, of Dunedin made a right turn off Tampa Road and onto 19th Street North, hitting the girl while she was in the crosswalk, the Florida Highway Patrol reports. The crosswalk signal indicated the girl could cross and Kozak had stopped for the red light before he made the right turn, but he failed to see the girl in the crosswalk, authorities report. The front of the SUV hit the girl on her right side, knocking her onto the roadway. The girl was …

A trio of 13-year-olds are making decorative bows in hopes of collecting $500 for UNICEF.
EDITOR'S NOTE: This story was originally posted on Dunedin Patch on Sept. 3. It was chosen for Huffington Post's Greatest Person of the Day feature on Sept. 5. Twins Annelise and Micheal Viera, Dunedin Highland Middle School students, and friend Ronnie Riccobene — weren't trying to raise money for a dance, a trip or even their back to school wardrobes at Safety Harbor's latest 3rd Friday event. No, the eighth-graders were selling their brightly-colored hair bows, flower clips and headbands at their All Tied Up Bowtique with the goal of raising $500 for a UNICEF water filtration project. "We started making the bows this summer while we were attending a St. Pete College for Kids camp at Curlew Creek Elementary School," Riccobene explained. "…

Investigators say Julia King, a former Dunedin Highland Middle School teacher, pawned the stolen iPad at a local Best Buy.
A former Dunedin Highland Middle School teacher was charged Friday with pawning an iPad that had been stolen from the school. Investigators with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office say Julia King, 34, sold the iPad for $145 to a local Best Buy in April. Detectives began investigating the case in September 2011 after the device was reported stolen by Pinellas County Schools. King, who has a Naples address, was arrested at a home in Palm Harbor around 2:20 p.m. Friday and taken to the Pinellas County Jail without further incident, deputies said. King had been employed at Dunedin Highland Middle before later transferring to East Lake High School, according to deputies. East Lake High's online staff directory lists King as a social studies …

Donald Manley, who has had to dodge vehicles and worse while assisting students from Dunedin Highland Middle School, was honored this month with the 2012 Maybelle Rollins Bradford Award.
Donald Manley is a fixture at Patricia Avenue and Union Street. He has been a school crossing guard for the past seven years, and for the past several of those, he has helped students travel to and from Dunedin Highland Middle School to the north. "I'm like a postman — I'm here rain, sleet or snow. But we don't get too much snow here," Manley said in his distinct Boston accent. "I never thought I'd be doing this." Given the proximity of the intersection to the school, Manley often assists hundreds of students each morning and afternoon. The job hasn't been without hazard. Manley "has had to deal with several gang fights, gunfire in the area and a student being shot by a BB gun," according to a media release from the Pinellas County Sheriff…
