Two of the legendary Florida Highwaymen — Isaac Knight and R. A. “Roy” McLendon —are visiting Stirling Art Studios & Gallery on Jan. 19 to talk to the public about their paintings.
Two of Florida's living art legends are visiting Dunedin while their work is on public display. Isaac Knight and R. A. “Roy” McLendon, two of the legendary Florida Highwaymen, are set to visit Stirling Art Studios & Gallery in Dunedin on Saturday, Jan. 19. Knight and McLendon were part of a group of 26 self-taught black landscape artists who made a living selling paintings door to door in the Fort Pierce area during the mid-1950s to '80s. Both artists are available to share stories and talk about their paintings from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Their work is among several pieces on display in a combined exhibit "On The Road: Highwaymen from Three Collectors" featuring the collections of Mark Torrance of Dunedin, Don Ball of Largo and Matthew …

Vice Mayor Ron Barnette portrayed the ghost of Dr. W.S. Blatchley in a City of Dunedin TV promotion for the Dunedin Historical Society's release of his 1900s-era "My Nature Nook" book.
Vice Mayor Ron Barnette's YouTube acting debut was more than appreciated on Sunday. Barnette portrayed the ghost of Dr. W.S. Blatchley in a Nov. 8 City of Dunedin TV spot promoting the Dunedin Historical Society's release of the historic figure's 1900s-era, limited-edition book of notes on the natural history of the city. In the 10-minute YouTube video, Dunedin Historical Museum curator Vinnie Luisi, who plays himself, happens upon the ghost of Dr. Blatchley (Barnette in period costume) sitting on a log in front of his home at J.C. Weaver Park. "I don't like furniture; I like nature," Barnette, as Blatchley, said to Luisi, making sure he was comfortable sitting on a wooden stump. Barnette, as Blatchley, welcomes Luisi to sit for moment and…

In 1998, someone came into the Dunedin Historical Museum and asked the attendant if they had any information on a historical figure named "Dr. Blatchley." Luckily, that attendant happened to be Vinnie Luisi, Dunedin Historical Society board member George Nigro explained to a large celebratory gathering of influential Dunedin residents and some elected officials at a private residence on Victoria Drive on Sunday evening before distributing the first of the 150 limited-edition, leather-bound editions of Blatchley's "My Nature Nook." Although Luisi, who became museum curator, had never heard of Dr. W.S. Blatchley, his quest for answers eventually led to the discovery of the man's only surviving book (out of 13). "That's how close we came to …

You may have felt like you stepped into a time machine to the 1860s if you were downtown on Saturday. The Dunedin Historical Museum and actors from 7th Florida, Company K, helped commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War with a living history demonstration on Main Street. Actors wore authentic period costumes, demonstrated a Civil War campsite, held a drill exhibition and musket demonstration. The event also highlighted Dunedin Historical Museum's main exhibit, "The Maple Leaf: An American Civil War Shipwreck," an interactive exhibit on loan from the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee. It features artifacts recovered from a Union supply ship that sank near Jacksonville in 1864 and it is on display until January 10, 2013. …

The toilets in the men's restroom at the Dunedin Public Library aren't the only ones to be victimized by thieves, and authorities are working on tracking down a suspect. It turns out that toilet flush valves were also recently stolen from the restrooms at the Dunedin Historical Society and Museum, Bay News 9 reports, and from at least three Clearwater locations. The valves, which cost the city about $75 apiece to replace, were reported stolen from the library last week, as first reported by Dunedin Patch. Similar crimes were also reported at the Clearwater Main Library, the Checkers on Gulf to Bay Boulevard and McDonald's, at 539 S. Missouri Ave., also were hit, according to Clearwater Police. "(Investigators) have developed a suspect and…

The sea of yellow at Dunedin's first Rubber Duck Derby over the weekend must have had an inspiring affect. "We had a surprise when we arrived at the museum Monday morning," said Dunedin Historical Museum spokeswoman Lisa Bosley. She said Dunedin's orange artist Steve Spathelf painted one on the door of the old train station, where the museum operates, that features "a little yellow duck in a Derby hat!" The benefit for Dunedin Historical Museum saw at least 618 rubber ducks floating to shore from the pier at Weaver Park on May 19, Bosley wrote in an email. All those ducks, took five volunteers (some from the Dunedin High National Honor Society), some in kayaks and stand-up paddles, to corral them toward the finish line. The race winners …

David Carson shines in his docent debut for Dunedin Historical Museum walking tours. The museum is adding an extension tour on Victoria Drive.
Our knowledgable guide David Carson’s first announcement is a warning: there will be a quiz at the end. “If I had known you were going to take pictures I would have done something with my hair,” Carson said. “I don’t have any makeup on or anything.” It is Carson's first time volunteering as a docent for the Dunedin Historical Museum's weekly guided walking tours. The museum just added a new Historic Victoria Drive edition, which premiers as a separate tour on Friday (Nov. 11). He warms up by asking us to notice of the small orange fruit paintings on businesses throughout town. “A local artist and another lady — I call them our city criminals — went out and painted some oranges on the sides of buildings without any permits or permission,” …

With all due respect Comm sorry if I'm spoiling the photo-op but you had the power on June 7 to fix what happened before you got there and you chose not to- that's what I know. There's nothing 'good neighborly' about 570 - it is a ridiculous monument to greed and disregard for one's neighbors and if you expect me to welcome that, then you sir , can go bark up a tree. Go lecture the foreign …   more ›
