The Grammy Foundation is taking nominations for its first-ever music educator award and there’s $10,000 on the line for the winner.
They battle in the trenches every day teaching youngsters about Beethoven, Bach and the importance of proper form when signing or playing a musical instrument. In some students, they inspire a simple appreciation for music. In others, they foster a passion that leads them on a path toward life on the stage. Because of all they do, the Grammy Foundation says music educators rock and now it wants to honor them with a new award it intends to roll out next year. Principal Christopher Bates of Dunedin Highland Middle was recognized for visionary leadership. Dunedin High, Garrison-Jones, Curtis Fundamental, Academie Da Vinci and Athenian Academy were also recognized.

Mayor Dave Eggers awarded several Dunedin schools during a "Top Apples Award" program this month. The second annual event recognizes Duendin schools or employees for achievements and contributions in six categories, according a news release from Pinellas County Schools. Winners were announced, along with the following remarks from the Pinellas County Schools release: Dunedin High School was recognized for Achievement in the Arts for "extensive success and recognition by the Florida School Music Association regarding the success of the DHS performing arts programs, including the Scottish Highlander Marching Band, the jazz ensemble, the Highlander symphonic winds, chorus, pipe band, orchestra, and advanced placement music theory programs." …

Today's shooting massacre at a Connecticut elementary school is a national tragedy. Protecting our schools and community is a No. 1 priority. How ready are Dunedin schools to respond to crisis?
Whether it is a public elementary school or a large high school, each Pinellas County school is required to have a security and crisis plan in place, in case of emergency. Dunedin schools are no exceptions. Crisis planning is updated yearly, according to Melanie Marquez, spokeswoman for the Pinellas County School District, which by law is exempt from sharing its security plans with the public and media. What Marquez was able to disclose is that each crisis plan is tailored to the individual needs and challenges of each public school in Pinellas County. In addition, each school is required to hold emergency drills for evacuating students and for lockdowns, when school doors are locked and no one is permitted to leave or enter the building. …
