Teen Builds Boat Racks for Youth Sailing Program

Alex Gawel, 15, and more than 35 volunteers constructed racks at Dunedin Marina on Dec. 15 to store new Laser racing sail boats that will ultimately allow the Dunedin Youth Sailing program to expand.

The Dunedin Youth Sailing Association was looking to purchase Laser sail boats so its progam could include more competitive racing options for the older teens. The only problem? The prorgam had no place to store the boats. That's when Alex Gawel, a 15-year-old member of Boy Scout Troop 10, decided to take it on as his Eagle Scout project. Alex Gawel learned to sail and race through the Dunedin Youth Sailing Assocation program, which caters to children ages 8 to 16. The Laser boat purchases would expand the Dunedin Youth Sailing program to include teens 16 to 18. His father Jeffery Gawel still has ties to the program. Teen Opens Drop Box for Worn American Flags

Zach Evenwel recently finished his Eagle Scout project, opening a place outside the National Armed Services & Law Enforcement Memorial Museum for people to drop their tattered and worn American flags for proper retirement.

Only Boy Scouts and U.S. Military are trained to properly retire an American flag. But not all people flying a U.S. Flag have direct access to those organizations. That's a problem Zachary Evenwel, 18, set out to solve for his Eagle Scout Project. Evenwel, a senior at Countryside High School, recently had an American flag drop box installed in front of the the National Armed Services & Law Enforcement Memorial Museum (NASLEMM) on Douglas Avenue in Dunedin. People can drop their shabby or worn American flags in the box any time and rest easy knowing it will be retired properly. Evenwel got the idea from one he saw in Chicago before he moved to the area seven years ago and from talking to people who didn't know what to do with their old …
