Vintage Vendors Expanding After Full Recovery From Fire

Knot on Main Street celebrates a complete recovery of the devastating June 2011 fire this weekend. A nearby Ozona store where displaced vendors took refuge is expanding at the same time.

If you like to hunting for unique treasures, you'll be happy to know that a popular Ozona vintage shop and Dunedin's Knot on Main Street are again ripe with bounty. Both celebrate grand openings this weekend.  Antiques and Uniques of Ozona, which opened in August less than two miles away from Dunedin's Knot on Main Street, quickly became a haven for displaced dealers after the consignment, antiques and collectibles store burned last June.  "We figured that when the Knot reopened, a lot of them would go back, but they didn't," said Kym Eggers, co-owner and vendor. The Ozona store celebrates the grand opening of a 2,500-square-foot expansion. Dealers will be on hand to talk about the pieces they are selling on Saturday (March 17). …

Knot On Main Street to Reopen Today

Renovations on one half of the fire-ravaged antique mall are complete, allowing vendors to move in.

Knot On Main Street, the popular antique mall that was severely damaged by a fire in June, will partially reopen Tuesday. The fire, which was deemed electrical and caused $150,000 in structural damage, displaced at least 60 tenants and caused plenty of headaches for property owners Bob and Barbara O'Connell. "It's been extremely difficult, dealing with all the repairs and all the red tape that goes with rebuilding," Barbara O'Connell said. "But everybody has been very supportive, working together to help us get this back up and running." The south half of the structure, which received mostly smoke and water damage, has been renovated and features new impact-resistant storm windows and doors, thicker insulation and a new drop ceiling. …

Consignment Store Is Haven for Displaced 'Knot' Vendors

Palm Harbor's Antique & Uniques is home to about 15 vendors from Knot on Main Street, which was destroyed by an electrical fire in June.

Vendors were left with a scorched remembrance of their business after a catastrophic fire engulfed Dunedin's Knot On Main Street antique mall in June. Just one month later, the grand opening of a Palm Harbor consignment store just down the road became a new place for vendors. Antique & Uniques follows the Knot's cooperative model. The consignment store run is owned by longtime friends and former Knot dealers Kym Eggers and Laura Cheek. “I loved the idea of a co-op mall,” said Eggers. “Laura and I met one day over margaritas and decided we could totally do this!” Antique & Uniques, 530 Alt. 19, is now home to a 25 vendors — 15 of which are from the Knot. Another 18 vendors are on the waiting list for space. “Immediately after the fire we …

Displaced Vendors Regroup from Fire Aftermath

The tenants of Knot On Main Street begin the painful rebuilding process one week after the costly blaze

An acrid smoky smell still hangs over Knot On Main Street antique mall more than a week after a fire ripped through the 55-year-old structure June 8. Windows and doors, which had either been shattered by the heat or blasted away by fire hoses, are now boarded up and posted with signs warning people to keep away from the dangerous site. Charred rugs and soot-stained pieces of furniture lay discarded in front of the building as a reminder of the inferno that blazed inside. “It’s smelled real bad in here since the fire,” Susan Dean, owner of the adjoining Find Your Peace collectibles shop, said on Monday. “I’ve been using air fresheners, coffee grounds and even ammonia to help get rid of the smell.” The blaze, deemed electrical in nature, …

A Tale of Two Tragedies: Recent Fires in Ozona & Dunedin Touch Local Artist

Sabrina Tropf, a victim of the Knot on Main Street fire, was on hand to comfort the burn victim from the Ozona Blue incident.

After losing most of her items in the Knot on Main Street antique mall fire in Dunedin last Wednesday, Sabrina Tropf and a girlfriend decided to enjoy a dinner at Palm Harbor's Ozona Blue on Saturday night as a way to unwind. “It was the first time I had ever been there,” Tropf said. “My girlfriend suggested we go there because she heard it was really good.” The artist with her own line of designer greeting cards has no medical training, no experience with traumatic injuries, and no history of being involved in fires. Little did she know she would soon find herself in the middle of her second of two unfortunate fire-related incidents.  According to Tropf, a party of five sitting adjacent to her seat at the bar had just finished their …
