Did you miss something this week on Patch? We've got you covered with this rundown of the week's top stories.

1. Despite a citizen advisory board's recommendation to the contrary, city leaders this week agreed to move forward with plans to bring a Dollar General Store to San Christopher Drive in place of a boat and auto storage lot that some call an "eyseore."  2. An emotional interaction between residents and a Pinellas County Sheriff's sergeant was the last straw for frustrated leaders of the Lyndhurst Street Neighborhood Watch group, which decided to disband. 3. A Dunedin man is in Pinellas County Sheriff's custody for allegedly pawning his stepmother's jewelry, authorities say. 4. The ability to handle large scale construction projects recently earned local firm Terbo Construction the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce Medium Size Business of the …

Residents Dissolve Lyndhurst Street Neighborhood Watch

Leaders dissolved the Dunedin neighborhood group last week, citing an overwhelming feeling of a lack of support from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

An emotional interaction between residents and a Pinellas County Sheriff's sergeant was the last straw for frustrated leaders of the Lyndhurst Street Neighborhood Watch group last Wednesday. Lyndhurst Street residents say they were merely reporting suspicious activity on their Dunedin street on Nov. 28, like Sheriff Bob Gualtieri encouraged them to do 15 days earlier during a Nov. 13 Southside Town Hall meeting at the Hale Senior Activity Center. Gualtieri told residents to keep calling, but that it takes time and lots of undercover work to infiltrate an underground drug operation. Deputies arrived on the scene Nov. 28 and searched persons in the driveway at a residence, ultimately releasing the individuals, said ex-Lyndhurst Neighborhood …

SO, I have always 100 % supported your efforts to keep the streets of Dunedin safe. If you take time to read the comments posted one minute the residents are bashing you and indicating that you are running a underground drug ring and the next they are singing your praise. Unstable minds don't make sense sometimes. I speak for a lot of residents in Dunedin we are grateful to have you as our SO. …   more ›

What Dunedin's Saying: Lyndhurst Street Neighborhood Watch

What do you think about the effort to create the Lyndhurst Street Neighborhood Watch, and what else can and should be done to help combat crime in the area?

Dunedin Patch's story last week about efforts to create the Lyndhurst Street Neighbood Watch has gotten lots of attention from our readers. Patch wrote about Stacy Rush and Donald DeVore and their quest to take back their neighborhood from crime and blight and about their recent National Night Out cookout, which got the attention of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. The story attracted plenty of insightful comments on Patch, and below are just a few of them. What's your take? What do you think of the couple's efforts? What else can and should be done about problems in the area? Post your comment below. LUCY: I live on Lyndhurst, I know exactly what you're talking about. I would love to support you, but it's because of the drug activity…

Lyndhurst street disbanded watch because Sheriff said he sees no crime on southside. If his men do not see drug deals then no one is dealing drugs. Must be poke mon cards they are selling. And nothing odd about ice cream truck after 7pm only ones buying ice cream are poke mon sellers.   more ›

Resident: 'It's Our Neighborhood, We're Taking It Back'

One Dunedin couple is determined to take back Lyndhurst Street one neighbor at a time.

Stacy Rush and Donald DeVore witnessed drug deals going down outside their fixer-upper almost immediately after buying it. The couple had to clear two years worth of overgrowth and yard debris accumulated from the home sitting vacant on Lyndhurst Street, just a few blocks from a violent home invasion on Chigaco Avenue during which a victim was pistol-whipped and another stabbed in May. It took the couple two months just to be able to get inside, Rush said. Among some of the trash found in the yard: drug needles. None of that sat well with Rush, a former member of the U.S. Coast Guard and law enforcement. Now, after about seven months in the house, the couple is leading a charge to take back their neighborhood by spearheading the creation …

The State Attorney's office is responsible for prosecuting criminals. And ALL laws on the books are simply not enforced, for reasons we don't know, and that I believe are mostly at the discretion of the sheriff. This is in LARGE part where the problems lie. People need to make the connection that it is simply not "law enforcement" not doing its job. When arrests are made, they are often out on …   more ›
