Twenty-year-old, and current USF student Corey Givens Jr., is running for Pinellas County School Board, District 7.
Corey Givens Jr. knows much will be made of his age and his “experience” during the race for the District 7 seat for the Pinellas County School Board. He knows he is not the type of person that usually gets elected to this position. Givens Jr., a 20-year-old college student at USF, says his youth and lack of political experience should be seen as a positive rather than a negative going into a race dominated by those who have little idea of what it is like to be a student in the Pinellas County School system. “I would bring a little diversity to the board,” Givens Jr. said. “Diversity with my race, my age and opinions. The Pinellas County School Board has given preliminary approval to a rezoning plan that would change boundaries for 27 elementary schools in the 2012-13 school year, including two in Dunedin.
School board members will decide next month whether to move forward with a rezoning plan that could affect 2,100 students at 27 elementary schools, including Dunedin and San Jose elementary schools in Dunedin. A vote at Tuesday's Pinellas County School Board meeting was the first of two needed to approve the plan, which would take effect during the 2012-13 school year. School officials say rezoning is needed to relieve crowding at some schools, while taking advantage of room at others. It's no secret that the Pinellas County School District has been in a state of turmoil for the past few months. The school board fired Superintendent Julie Janssen in August, and the poor economy has forced painful budget cuts. But now the school district has a new leader at the helm. Dr. John A. Stewart, a former deputy superintendent of Pinellas County Schools, will fill in until a new superintendent is hired. Stewart, who is 67, agreed to come out of retirement to help the school district out. “When they proposed an opportunity for me to come back, I said, 'Yes, I’d kind of like to do that,' ” Stewart said.
