Richard Kearns, who crosses elementary and high school students in Dunedin, was recently lauded for his service.
Richard Kearns issues pedestrians, dogs and school bus drivers a warm "hello" or a friendly wave twice a day, five days a week, as he has for the past six years. "The good Lord willin' and the creek don't rise, I'll do it for another 10," the small-town North Carolina native said from his Dunedin school crossing guard post on a recent sunny afternoon. Kearns crosses between five and 20 students a day at Belcher Road and Solon Avenue, and has gotten to know many of the regular pedestrians and resident dog walkers over the years. He even knows the dogs by name. He starts his day at County Road 1 and Falcon Drive, in plenty of time for the 7:05 a.m. starting bell at Dunedin High, then goes to his second morning shift at the Belcher-Solon post…
