At its Feb. 26 meeting, Pinellas County Commissioners will vote on whether or not to place a sales tax for transit improvement on the November 2014 ballot.
Pinellas County Commissioners took the next step Tuesday to ensure there is a public vote on a sales tax increase in November 2014 that would go toward Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority improvements. By voting 6-1 Tuesday, commissioners cleared the way to decide at their Feb. 26 meeting whether or not to place the proposed sales tax increase on the 2014 ballot. The vote, however, is a mere placeholder until an ordinance is drafted for the PSTA sales tax referendum. "For more than 30 years, we having been talking about transit," said commissioner Janet Long. An new bus service for north Pinellas County begins Dec. 10. You can try it for free through the end of December.
Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority is launching an new bus system designed especially for north county suburbs, including Dunedin. Local leaders and PSTA officials celebrated the upcoming launch of PSTA's new North County Connector routes during a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday. PSTA considered input from local residents when designing the three new bus routes which will serve Dunedin, East Lake, Palm Harbor, Tarpon Springs, Countryside, Oldsmar, and Westchase. "It was basically designed by the public," Brad Miller, PSTA C.E.O, said. The North County Connector routes will feature mini buses that can accommodate up to 14 seated passengers and up to two wheelchairs or scooters. Public transit officials are granting free rides to northern Pinellas County passengers of three new bus routes for the kick-off month beginning Dec. 10. Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) will offer the free rides through the end of the month. On Tuesday, officials celebrate the launch of the North County Connector service during a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Shoppes at Boot Ranch in Palm Harbor. The North County Connectors will serve outlying north county residents trying to reach the main Pinellas bus routes, connecting to Pasco County Public Transit and HART. The Jolley Trolley's newest bus is set to run in early November, with performance and design modifications.
One ride on the Jolley Trolley is all it takes to understand its appeal. When Cathy Frain and Chuck Shaw come to visit relatives every year, the Jolley Trolley is always on their to-do list. They like to ride the trolley and use it as a means of getting around to sightsee, shop and dine along its route. “We love the trolley,” Frain said. Residents and tourists alike enjoy trolley rides up and down Clearwater Beach, and to Dunedin, Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs on the weekend routes.
