A glitch in the phone system caused the calls to go out.
Early on Election Day, the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Office made automatic calls telling voters them that they could vote until 7 p.m. Wednesday, the day after election day, according to Tampabay.com. Of course, polls close at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Nancy Whitlock, with the Pinellas Supervisor of Elections Office told Patch that there were 12,310 calls placed between 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Earlier reports said that perhaps only a few hundred people got the call. All 12,310 were then called back with the correct information, Whitlock said. A telecommunications glitch delayed the precinct results by about an hour, a Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections official said Tuesday.
Election officials were working out a telecommunications glitch Tuesday and had to have precinct results driven to the Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Office in Largo to tally the Primary Day results, officials said. Supervisor of Elections Deborah Clark said that the issue could have been with the phone lines. Computer servers, which have been used since 2008, are tested before each election and there were no problems, Clark said. There is even a backup server as a fail safe. Still, officials had to go to Plan B, Clark said, which included driving in the memory sticks containing voter information from 299 precincts earlier than expected to be counted. The Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections halted the verification process of potential non-citizen voters, after questioning the accuracy of the list provided by the Division of Elections.
Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections Deborah Clark announced Friday that she halted processing the list of potential non-citizen voters distributed to all Florida Supervisors of Elections by the Division of Elections. "The accuracy of the voter registration database is of the utmost importance,” Clark said in a released statement, “and we will continue our efforts to ensure the information is current. Keep an eye on your mailbox for a red-white-and-blue mailer from the Supervisor of Elections Deborah Clark. Clark is sending information for voters about possible changes to their voting precinct.
