Dunedin Highland Games 2013: A Spectator's Guide

Kilt-clad athletes battle for athletic supremacy at the Dunedin Highland Games on Saturday, April 13. Here's what to know before you go.

The strongest men in kilts compete at Highlander Park on Saturday. The competition is marked with more Scottish traditions for spectators, including beer, food, craft vendors, sheep dog demonstrations, as well as live Celtic-fusion bands, pipe bands and a Highland dance competition. 5 Things to Know for Unity Breakfast, March Saturday

Dunedin's annual Unity Breakfast and Diversity March honors the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's dream, and this year officials are commemorating Lorraine Leland.

1) It starts with free breakfast. The public is invited to share the most important meal of the day at the Martin Luther King Jr Recreation Center, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. It includes: 2) It includes a little exercise. After breakfast, city officials and visitors will march about seven-tenths of a mile from Martin Luther King Jr Recreation Center to Pioneer Park, starting at about 10:30 a.m. 3) It ends with free entertainment. Participants include adult and youth chiors from Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, as well as the Dunedin High School step team, until 12:30 p.m. 4) Multi-tasking is allowed. Dunedin's Green Market will also be in Pioneer Park, so as they say, the more the merrier. 5) Weather should be cooperating. Other than a …

It was such a pleasure to be part of this Saturday's Unity Breakfast and day's celebration. I carried with me a quote from Dr. King which I treasure: "An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity." I was very proud of Dunedin throughout this day as I was reminded of so much we do to …   more ›

Snow in Forecast for Dunedin Saturday

Local Parks & Recreation Athletic Coordinator Greg Svendgard is calling for snow this Saturday evening for the Dunedin Holiday Parade and Old Fashioned Christmas.

The National Weather Service may only call for a low of 64 degrees this Saturday, but Greg Svendgard is going to make it snow in Dunedin. Svendgard is coordinating the near weather miracle on Main Street for the city's annual Dunedin Holiday Parade and Old Fashioned Christmas, for the first time in about five or six years. About 23 tons of "snow" from Gainesville Ice will arrive in the form of ice blocks and be chipped into tiny snowflake-like pieces through a mulcher. It's enough to cover a 6- to 8-foot-high slide about 25 to 30 feet long in the parking lot between Blur Night Club and the Dunedin Historical Museum. The "snow mountain," as city staff refers to it, will allow children to simulate sledding downhill. Another three tons will …

Limitless Playground Opens at Honeymoon Island

After years of planning and research, the limitless playground, which is accessible to handicapped people of all ages, is complete at Honeymoon Island State Park.

Honeymoon Island State Park's new “limitless” playground had already passed third-grader Aiden Barnes' test when officials celebrated its grand opening ceremony Saturday.   The Madeira Beach Fundamental student was all smiles when he cut the ribbon. The new playground replaces one that had been worn by Honeymoon Island’s salty air. Its construction was stalled slightly over the summer when a gopher tortoise burrow was found on the site, so the new playground was moved about 200 feet. Officials built a fence around the tortoise's area. And to keep with the playful theme, one of the park’s biologists even added a wooden horse to its corral. The playground is called limitless because it is accessible to all, including children who need …

Thank you for the very nice article. As the chairman of the Love Fore event at Countryside Country Club this past March, I would like to correct your reference to the sources of funding for the playground. While the grant from Publix was much appreciated, it was far less than the one-third of the total costs of the playground as referenced in your article. It was in fact the funds raised by the …   more ›
