Congressman Gus Bilirakis addressed the crowd at a Veterans Day ceremony at Curlew Hills Memory Gardens on Monday.
Congressman Gus Bilirakis, who was re-elected last week, participated in Curlew Hills Memory Gardens' 25th annual Veterans Day Ceremony Monday morning. Bilirakis decided to attend the ceremony after finding out he did not need to be back in Washington, DC, until Tuesday. He made an inpromptu speech during the ceremony. "We must never forget that our true American heroes are our veterans," Bilirakis told the audience, many of whom were veterans. Col. Jerry F. Custin, USAF Retired, served as the master of ceremonies. A distinct Veterans of Foreign Wars memorial, made of stones from each U.S. state, is being rededicated today after it was relocated from a downtown parking lot to a space inside Edgewater Park.
A distinct Veterans of Foreign Wars memorial, made of stones from each U.S. state, is being rededicated today after it was moved from a downtown parking lot. The ceremony honoring veterans features the Dunedin-Palm Harbor VFW Post 2550, Dunedin High School's Navy JROTC, Mayor Dave Eggers, and representatives from Congressman Bill Young's office beginning at 2 p.m. in Edgewater Park. The memorial was constructed near the Dunedin Municpal Marina in 1970 to honor all those who served in the United States military. The asphalt parking lot developed around it years later. As people across America recognize men and women who have served in the armed forces, students in Dunedin's public schools will be in the classroom. All Pinellas County Public Schools are open Monday, Nov. 12, the national observance of the holiday. Most government offices in Pinellas are closed. Pinellas' public school students won’t have to wait long for some time off, though. Schools will be closed the week of Nov 19-23, for two days of professional development for teachers and for Thanksgiving break, according to the school district’s calendar. Thanks to all the veterans who have served our country! Dunedin is honoring military veterans with a ceremony at Dunedin High School at 9 a.m. today. Banks, government offices and libraries in Dunedin will be closed in observance of Veterans Day. Garbage collection will continue as scheduled.
