Bob Hackworth, who served as Dunedin mayor from 2002 to 2009, is challenging Mayor Dave Eggers' seat, a city clerk official said Thursday.
Rumors of a Bob Hackworth run for mayor have swirled around town for months. The city clerk's office confirmed Thursday that the former Dunedin mayor submitted all the petition signatures required to formally challenge incumbent Mayor Dave Eggers. The city clerk's official said Hackworth was only missing a few forms, but that she was confident they would be turned in before the qualifying period ends Monday. Candidates wishing to join the city commissioners race have a new qualifying deadline. It was moved up so that Dunedin did not miss the county deadline for submitting ballot language.
Leaders officially moved the qualifying deadline for the city election 10 days sooner than the original date, commissioners voted Thursday. The new qualifying period to July 16 through noon on July 30. City leaders are deciding how soon to move up the qualifying deadline for commission candidates in the November election during Thursday's meeting (6:30 p.m. at City Hall).
Leaders have to bump up the qualifying deadline for the city election; it’s just a matter of how soon. City Clerk Denise Schlegel told commissioners earlier this month that keeping the Aug. 13 deadline would cause Dunedin to miss the Pinellas County Supervisor of Election's ballot language deadline (Aug. 3). The election is Nov. 6. She gave commissioners two options for moving up the deadline: Julie Ward Bujalski said given the short notice, she thought giving the "longest time available for people to qualify is the fairest thing to do." Officials make a final decision this Thursday during the city commission meeting (6:30 p.m., City Hall). Whichever qualifing period is passed, Schlegel said she would like to revisit Dunedin's deadlines …
