Jason Paul's family increased the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect Tuesday. In an effort to generate credible information and leads in the city's first homicide of the year Paul's family added $10,000 to the $1,000 Crime Stoppers reward already offered, according to Clearwater Police. Detectives say Paul, 22, was riding his bike home from work at Sunset Point Road and U.S. 19. He stopped at Walmart and bought some items. He was about a block from his house when he was found stabbed to death at 12:40 a.m. on Glenwood Avenue. Clearwater Police detectives are looking for evidence, motive and witnesses. Pinellas County Schools continue to look into rumors of potential violence connected to the Mayan calendar, but no credible threats have been found at this time, officials report.
Although there are no credible threats, as a precaution Pinellas County Schools will increase patrols by local law enforcement agencies around campuses due to rumors of potential violence connected to the end of the Mayan calendar on Friday, Dec. 21, according to school officials. The increased security will be in place to make students and parents feel more secure, said Melanie Marquez, Pinellas County Schools spokeswoman. “This is happening all over the country,” Marquez said. Authorities may have found a source of the rumors which have circulated at schools including Tarpon Springs, Clearwater and Pinellas Park through Facebook and other social media since Monday, Marquez said. Democratic challengers Janet Long and Charlie Justice have defeated Republican incumbents Nancy Bostock and Neil Brickfield.
In front of hundreds of GOP faithful at the Hilton Carillon on Tuesday night, Pinellas County Commissioners Nancy Bostock and Neil Brickfield conceded to their Democratic challengers, Janet Long and Charlie Justice. Long defeated Brickfield, 55.27 percent to 44.73 percent. Justice beat Bostock, 52.35 percent to 47.65 percent. Bostock thanked Pinellas for supporting her as a commissioner and said she hopes to continue serving the county in the future. "I’m proud to have served our local government regardless of the results," she said fighting back tears Tuesday night. A 16-year-old black male teen is the victim in a neighborhood shooting off Pinellas Trail in north Clearwater Sunday night, according to authorities. The teen is at Bayfront Medical Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A Dunedin teen is injured after a Clearwater neighborhood shooting near Pinellas Trail on Sunday night, Clearwater Police report. The 16-year-old black male was found at a residence on Minnesota Drive, off of Fairmont Avenue, about a block off the Pinellas Trail in Clearwater, around 10:25 p.m. He was airlifted to Bayfront Medical Center, but as of Monday morning, his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Clearwater authorities said. Clearwater authorities said the victim was not able to provide a suspect description and possible witnesses at the scene are not being cooperative. The investigation is ongoing.

Herman Acosta, 43, was arrested Wednesday for allegedly stealing toilet pipes from Clearwater Main Library, according to Clearwater Police.
Update: Suspect Herman Acosta was also arrested last week and charged with committing similar crimes at several Largo fast food restaurants, police said. Through the Lightning Foundation, Vinik vowed to honor local difference makers and their charities through the Community Hero Awards by giving millions over a five-year span. Christopher Holly, 28, of Clearwater was trying to make a u-turn on U.S. 19 when his suv was hit by a car that ran a red light, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
A Clearwater man was killed while making a u-turn on U.S. 19 early Saturday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Investigators say Christopher Holly, 28, was driving northbound on U.S 19 and was attempting to make a u-turn at Republic Drive around 3:03 a.m. when his 2005 Nissan Xterra was hit by a 1999 Nissan Altima traveling southbound that ran a red light. The impact of the crash caused the Xterra to roll over. Holly died at the scene. Investigators say that Adrian David Rodriguez, 33, of Clearwater, was driving the Altima. He was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. The accident remains under investigation.
