Friends Remember Piping Legend Sandy Keith

Sandy Keith is credited with putting Florida's Scottish pipe and drum scene on the map.

The man credited with putting the Florida piping scene on the map passed away late Wednesday.

Alexander “Sandy” Keith was 74.

He was a longtime director of the City of Dunedin Pipe and Drum Band and Dunedin High School Scottish Highlander Band program.

Keith, a native of Paisley, Scotland, took over the city pipe and drum program in 1982 and is credited with expanding it to three bands. He led the band to high marks at the North American Championships and the World Championships in Scotland, according to a tribute on Pipes | Drums, and remained the program director until last year.

Keith began piping at age 11 and studied under Peter MacLeod Sr., according to the Pipes | Drums tribute.

A memorial service is set for Saturday, Feb. 11 (4 p.m.) at the Conmy Center at , according to the City of Dunedin Pipe Band.
